Artwork from 911

10 years ago in my backyard on 9/11 I created a piece of artwork that was so personal and emotional that I have not shared it with very many people. I took a canvas and glued paper onto it to form the American flag. In the red stripes I wrote all of my angry, confused, sad feelings from that day. I felt it symbolized the blood that was spilled all over our freedom.

In the white stripes I wrote my feelings of hope, love and compassion that I felt for all the lives that were lost. The white stripes were also a place for me to write feelings of hope that I knew I would need over the coming days, months and years to heal from this tragic event.

Some of the words are my own, and some of the are loosely translated from the book "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran. It is a book that brings me great comfort whenever I am at a crossroad or about to embark on a new phase of my life.

The smaller words on the red stripes were written to be unreadable. I wanted to capture the anger, and over the words I wrote HOPE * LOVE * FREEDOM * COMPASSION * HEARTS * HUMANITY * HEALING * SOUL * LIFE * CONNECTIONS * PEACE. These words were written in gold paint.

Here are my words, Kahlil Gibran's words and other quotes of hope on the white stripes. I did not follow the rules that I learned in English class. It is just a tumble of words and feelings that I had to capture.
